Our Student Support Provision (SSP) is one of the Primary SSP’s within the Borough of Bromley. Melanie King is SSP Lead and Assistant SENCO and responsible for the SSP.

Who is the SSP for?
The SSP is for eighteen, primary aged pupils diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Complex Communication Needs. All of the pupils have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Places in the SSP are allocated through the London Borough of Bromley’s SEN Teams consultation process.
How does my child gain a place in the SSP?
Applications for the SSP are separate to mainstream admissions. If you wish to apply for a place in Harris Primary Orpington’s SSP you will need to contact your child’s assigned case worker. They will submit your child’s EHCP and supporting documents to Orpington’s SSP Panel, which is held half termly. Your child’s case will be discussed by a team of professionals, including SSP managers and school principals, where a decision will be made on whether your child’s needs would be met within an SSP. Your case worker will also communication the panel’s decision back to you.

Where is the SSP?
We have our own learning area, which is organised to ensure children with additional needs feel safe and calm in the learning environment. We have separate play areas for some of the children in the SSP that find the mainstream playground over stimulating.
We have two classes – one for EYFS and KS1, one for KS2. Each class has a qualified teacher and two SEN support assistants.
What is the SSP curriculum?
All of the lessons in our SSP are:
- Communication based;
- Visually based;
- Practical, functional and meaningful, which promotes ‘real’ learning situations across all Key Stages.
- Aimed at preparing pupils for inclusion in the mainstream classroom environment.
All pupils are given access to all the core subjects (Maths, English and Science) and the Foundation subjects (all other subjects) of the National Curriculum. The SSP caters for a wide range of ages – from the Foundation Stage through to Key Stage 2. These abilities are taken into consideration when differentiating lessons for small group teaching.
There is an emphasis on encouraging pupils to take increasing levels of responsibility for their own learning and therefore promoting independence.
We aim for all pupils to be included in some weekly mainstream lessons to help build their social skills and further enhance their learning experiences. There are children in our SSP who attend lessons in the mainstream lesson daily.
All children are assessed regularly to ensure they are progressing within their learning environment through standardised tests and phonics checks.
What other agencies are involved?
Speech and Language Therapy (SLT)
All children in our resource base work with Orpington’s Speech and Language Therapist works with our pupils. Our therapist is called Miss Langmaid. The therapist works creates a personalised speech and language therapy programme that is shared with all staff working with the children. Each class also received weekly social and communication group sessions where the children focus on age specific and social communication needs associated with Autism
Educational Psychologist (EP)
The SSP works closely with Bromley’s Educational Psychology team, where a specific psychologist is allocated to the SSP for regular liaison and review of pupils' progress. Specific consideration is given to reviewing the progress of pupils in Year 5, before their transfer to secondary school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is used to access the attainment of the youngest SSP pupils. Our KS1 and KS2 children are assessed using the National Curriculum. They are assessed using standardised testing. SEN (Special Educational Needs) Support Plans are reviewed and written each term for all of the SSP pupils.
Communication with parents
SSP staff are on the gate at the start and end of each day. I f you would like to discuss any issues relating to your child, please speak to them to arrange an appointment. In addition to the statutory Statement of Education, Health and Care Plan Annual Review meeting, parent review meetings are held each term to discuss each child's progress. Parents are welcome to telephone the school at any time.
Transitions into the SSP are personalised to each child. The SSP lead and their new class teacher will visit your child in their current school to meet and observe them. They will speak to the adults working with your child and create a transition plan that will best support the change that your child will be experiencing.
