We have been informed some parents have received an email stating: ‘As schools will be closing, if you're entitled to free school meals, please send your bank details and we'll make sure you're supported’. This is a scam email - do not respond, and delete immediately. https://t.co/r6cJP28dyY

PLEASE RETWEET: with 36,000 families at our schools in London and Essex, we want to supply food parcels for those in need (on top of free school meals which we’re already doing). We’ll fully fund this but URGENTLY need a supermarket chain to help.

There is an expectation that all our children will continue with their learning at home and teachers will keep in contact with families to offer support.

We will be putting updates on pupils’ learning on the academy website here each Friday. Simply look at the Year group page here for your child and ask them to complete work in the exercise book and pack provided.

If you have a query please email to the info@harrisprimaryorpington.org.uk account and someone will advise you.

Remind your child that if they are worried about anything or need to talk to someone while the school is closed there are places they can go for support. For example, Childline can be contacted for free on 0800 1111, or children can get support online.

Why not kick off each day of Home Learning with a PE session with Joe Wicks - Joe will be on his Youtube Channel every morning at 9.00am with a PE session suitable for small children up to secondary school age (and beyond!).  Pupils, siblings, parents, carers, staff and all of us still at school looking after our keyworker children - we will all be doing it, so please join in!

As a school we use 'Letterjoin' for our handwriting scheme.

Get ready to practise handwriting at home via the letterjoin website at https://www.letterjoin.co.uk/

Letter-join includes lots of great handwriting activities for pupils to enjoy at home, using the same font as we use at school.

We would love to see pictures of you all joining in with the PE sessions and doing your home learning - and this does not have to just be learning from your home learning packs.  Reading, cooking, art - send your pictures in to info@harrisprimaryorpington.org.uk and we will share them with you later in the week.  We would love to tweet them too - please state in your email if you would prefer that your pictures were not shared on Twitter.

We will also put the link on the Home Learning pages of our website, together with a generic Purple Mash log in for each year group, so don't worry if your child cannot remember their log in.

Here is some guidance from the Department for Education on keeping your child safe online:

Where can I go to get support to help keep my child safe online?

There is a lot of support available to keep your child safe online. Below are some useful links to help parents and carers:

  • Thinkyouknow (advice from the National Crime Agency to stay safe online)
  • Internet matters (support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online)
  • Parent info (support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online)
  • LGfL (support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online)
  • Net-aware (support for parents and careers from the NSPCC)

Reading

This page: https://readon.myon.co.uk/ has a great free online library so children can still access reading every day.

Daily Lessons on YouTube and Facebook

Learning to read at home with Read Write Inc. Phonics during School Closure

Daily lessons for children
We are excited to announce that from Monday 23rd March we are scheduling Read Write Inc. Phonics lessons on Facebook and YouTube for children to watch at home.

We will release three short Speed Sound lessons with one of our trainers every day for the next two weeks. The films will only be available at the times below:

  • Set 1 Speed Sounds at 9.30 am and again at 12.30 pm
  • Set 2 Speed Sounds at 10.00 am and again at 1.00 pm
  • Set 3 Speed Sounds at 10.30 am and again at 1.30 pm

Please note: the films are streamed live and won’t be available at other times.

We will also release a film of a teacher reading a poem for Reception and Year 1 children to join in with at 2.00 pm every day. The poems will be available to watch again and again on YouTube.

A great opportunity for children to learn these by heart!

Parents can sign up to either our Facebook page  or our YouTube channel.

Films for parents

Films for parents to help their child learn to read at home with Read Write Inc. Phonics are available on our website and YouTube channel.

The YouTube channel will be redesigned shortly to help parents find the films easily.

We will add a parent film to Facebook every day.

Best wishes,
